Intent to Homeschool
Families in Washington State have the right to choose home-based instruction (homeschooling) for their children. If you are a Tukwila School District resident and wish to homeschool your child, please follow the steps below:
Steps to Begin Homeschooling
1. Submit a Declaration of Intent (DOI)
Parents/guardians must file a Declaration of Intent to Provide Home-based Instruction each school year by September 15, or within two weeks of beginning homeschooling.
-
This form must be submitted to the Tukwila School District Office.
-
A DOI is not a withdrawal form. If your student is currently enrolled in a Tukwila school, you must first formally withdraw your student from their school. The DOI should be submitted to the District Office on the same date of withdrawal (if applicable).
-
Only children between the ages of 8–18 need a DOI on file. Children under age 8 do not need to be included.
2. Verify Student’s Enrollment Status
If your child is currently enrolled in a Tukwila school:
-
District staff will confirm whether you are fully withdrawing your child or selecting partial enrollment (part homeschool/part public school).
-
If fully withdrawn, the school will update records.
-
If partial, your child(ren) will remain enrolled for the agreed-upon classes/activities, with “Home-Based Instruction” noted in their file.
