COVID-19 News and Updates

October 2

All Tukwila School District Staff and Families

As we close out the month of September and our first few weeks of school, I’d like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and perseverance in supporting our students and families. I’d also like to thank and appreciate all of our students and families for attending classes and supporting our schools. This is not the school year that any of us wanted or imagined, but it is where we find ourselves.

Although the school year started with remote learning, we continue to monitor county health metrics to determine the potential for providing in-person learning for our students.

I had hoped to share a reopening plan that would have been able to allow all students back in schools in person this fall. We know that most would like to be in school and that our staff miss connecting with them in person as well. However, since the beginning of the COVID-19 Pandemic we have been working on plans that will allow us to open schools and to make decisions on instruction for our students based on what the science has been telling us about transmission of this particular virus. We have been monitoring reports of increased COVID-19 cases in our community and are in close communication with King County Public Health, OSPI, The Puget Sound ESD, and neighboring school districts. Based on the current trajectory of infections in King County. I will be recommending to the school board that Tukwila School District start the 2020-21 school year in a distance learning model. <click link for full text>

Superintendent Reopening Update Letter to Families

June 18

The staff in the Tukwila School District realize that we are in unprecedented times and we would like to know how are families are coping with all of the challenges that they have been presented with since our school closures. In an effort to have this information we are providing a short survey to all parents and guardians that have students in the Tukwila School District.

April 6, 2020

Today, Governor Inslee announced that schools will be closed for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 Coronavirus. During this closure, all schools in the district will remain closed. Without these restrictions, public health authorities have told us the rate of infection will overwhelm the healthcare system.

We acknowledge continued school closures are difficult on students, staff, families and the entire community. This is disappointing news for all of us:  students miss their friends and teachers, and we miss our students. The extended closure also raises numerous questions for students and families. We are working quickly to answer your questions as soon as possible.
