Migration Overview

Tukwila School District is excited to share that we are transitioning to a new system called Skyward Qmlativ, launching in April 2026! This upgrade will make it easier for our schools to manage student information, attendance, grades, and more, helping us better serve our students and families.

We’ve been planning this transition since Spring 2024, working behind the scenes to make sure everything is ready. Our staff are receiving training so they can confidently use the new system and support students and families throughout the year.

We know that big changes can sometimes take a little time to get used to, and we appreciate your patience as we make this switch. Once it’s fully up and running, the new system will help us provide even better support for students, families, and staff across our district.

What is Qmlativ and why is it so important?

Qmlativ is the latest iteration of Skyward, an information system Tukwila uses for data management of student, staff and financial information, grades, scheduling, attendance, and all business services. Skyward allows for the creation of reports our schools and departments rely on, while also offering important internal uses like payroll, tracking time off, billing and invoice payments, and numerous other uses. Nearly every staff member in Tukwila School District utilizes this system as part of their work each day, and some staff members in our school offices and central office use the tool multiple times per day.

What are the "Dark Days" I am reading and/or hearing about?

The term “Dark Days” refers to the period when both Skyward SMS 2.0 and Qmlativ will not be available. This represents the final stages of the migration to the new system.

Key Dates:

Tuesday, March 31, 2026 – 2:00 p.m.: Skyward SMS 2.0 is locked; no access for staff or families.
March 31 – April 6, 2026: No access to Skyward or Qmlativ. All system updates, reports, and record changes will be paused.
April 6 – April 12, 2026: District migration teams configure and finalize Qmlativ. There is still no access to the old system.
Starting April 13, 2026: Qmlativ goes live and is fully available for district users.

During these “Dark Days,” the system is being carefully prepared to ensure a smooth transition. Thank you for your patience as we complete this important upgrade.

In addition to "Dark Days," are there additional dates I need to be aware of?

Tuesday, March 31, 2026 is the last day to enter Time Off Leave transactions.
Wednesday, April 1, 2026 at 3:00 p.m. – Family & Student Access will be locked.
Thursday, April 2, 2026 – Attendance alerts sent via Skyward and Blackboard will be temporarily unavailable. Low balance alerts for food service accounts will also be temporarily unavailable.
Tuesday, March 31, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. – InTouch will be locked and will be restored on Monday, April 13, 2026 at 7:00 a.m.
Thursday, April 2, 2026 morning – The Skyward Mobile app will be temporarily unavailable.
April 6-10, 2026 – No school for Spring Break.
During the “Dark Days” period, all attendance entries, account balance adjustments, changes to student information, and fee tracking will be updated approximately two to three weeks after Qmlativ goes live.

Why is this switch happening mid-year?

Skyward is phasing out their SMS 2.0 student, financial and human resources management system and migrating school districts over to the Qmlativ platform in select cohorts. Districts are migrated generally in April or during the summer and several factors go into determining when districts will begin their migration work. In partnership with NWRDC (Northwest Regional Data Center), our software support team, Tukwila will be migrating in April 2026.

Who decided on the Qmlativ mid-year migration?

What factored into the decision to roll this out?

When NWRDC is working with districts on a migration plan, they consider the size of the district they are working with, the software support team’s schedule and capacity to provide necessary support to migrating districts, as well as the impact on district processes (i.e., payroll, grading, student data, employee information, etc.). Districts also make internal plans to best assess when they will be prepared and best equipped to move forward with migration. Tukwila began planning this migration in the Spring of 2024 and were added to the April 2025 cohort by NWRDC when all factors were considered.

Is Qmlativ available as a mobile app?

Will staff be given more time on early-release days or other contracted time to complete the training?

Will 1:1 training be available or is all training self-paced?

Users with the greatest level of access across the system have the greatest amount of training materials to review. All training has been self-paced through the Knowledge Hub/Professional Development Center (PDC). Technology staff are preparing to provide additional teacher support as needed prior to and after migration, while Business & Finance staff are preparing to do the same for all business functions.

I am a parent/guardian in the district. Is there anything I need to do?

Two important things you can do at your earliest convenience:

Make sure your student’s health and contact information is accurate and current.
Check Skyward Family Access and make sure your contact and emergency contact information is accurate and current.

To update your student’s information, please contact your school’s registrar prior to March 31, 2026.

As a parent/guardian, how does migrating to Qmlativ impact me?

For now, there will be no changes.

March 31, 2026, at 2 pm, Skyward SMS will go dark for approximately one week, as the database goes through the Data Migration Tool. During this time, Skyward SMS will be inaccessible to everyone, except those on the Qmlativ Migration Team. When Qmlativ is launched, the parent/guardian experience should be seamless, with information available to parents/guardians just as before, existing within a new interface and platform.

How do I get support through this migration?

For those contracted to work between March 31- April 6 and need:

Student Information

Paper enrollment for new students
Cum File for reference
Attendance (March 31 - schools must take attendance before 1:58 p.m.)
Nurses will do paper charting for office visits & medication administration

Business Activities

All system work should be completed before 2 p.m. on March 31.
For most staff, they will be on spring break and not expected to work.
Skyward SMS will be available for viewing and reporting on April 13.

Staff are completing training so they can support students and families with the new system.

System Unavailable: March 31 (2:00 p.m.) – April 6, 2026

The current Skyward system will be temporarily unavailable for everyone.
This includes access to Skyward reporting, record updates, data validations, and employee access.

Migration Setup and Configuration: April 6 – April 12, 2026

District teams will set up and configure Qmlativ behind the scenes to ensure a smooth launch.
There will still be no access to Skyward SMS 2.0 during this period.

Qmlativ Available: Starting April 13, 2026

Our new system will be fully operational for district users, helping schools manage attendance, grades, and student information more efficiently.
