RE: OSPI Guidance on Reopening of Schools
Today, State Superintendent Chris Reykdal released guidelines to school districts in regard to the reopening of schools in the Fall. The guidelines were broad, and gives school districts, in partnership with students, staff, families and local health departments, the ability to create a school model that is customized to fit the unique needs of their students, and community. There will not be a one-size fits all model for school in Washington state next year.
The health and safety of our students, staff and community comes first. As Tukwila plans for different school scenarios, we are committed to doing whatever it takes to protect our community’s health and ensure that every child can achieve to their highest level. We are committed to working with our schools, educators, parents, and community partners to provide equitable support for every student’s success, with proven and responsive solutions during this unprecedented time.
We are moving forward with parent, staff and student work groups to discuss the best model for all of our students. Several options of models include:
Face to Face Instruction
Spilt or rotating schedules with distance learning
Phased-in opening with continuous learning
Continuous learning 2.0 – a more effective remote learning system.
We want to ensure equitable access to learning. This is an opportunity to examine our current system and transform our practices to further close opportunity gaps and to reconsider and shift past practices that have contributed to racial inequality and a lack of equitable opportunities for students.
We will be working throughout the summer to prepare for Fall and will be providing weekly progress updates as the work progresses. Our target date, with as much clarity as possible, is to announce opening recommendations by July 1st. However, there may be additional health guidelines or county/state requirements that may shift our plans before the actual opening of school. We will do our best to keep all informed of what any of those possible changes may be. Lastly, we will continue to provide weekly updates on our progress between now and July 1st. Please look for another update by June 19th at the latest. We look forward to being back in session with our students in whatever form that may take.
